About

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and it’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with. This page offers a little more about me, how I work, and what you might expect if we work together.

Matthew Smith, counsellor and psychotherapist at Hazelwood Therapy

I work with adults, offering counselling and psychotherapy in a steady, reflective way. My work focuses on helping people make sense of difficult thoughts, feelings, and patterns, at a pace that feels right for them.

My approach is humanistic and collaborative, with an emphasis on understanding emotional and relational experience. I’m interested in how difficulties are shaped by relationships and past experience, and I aim to work in a way that is thoughtful, responsive, and grounded rather than prescriptive. My background in social science and social research informs how I understand emotional difficulty as something shaped not only by individual history, but also by the wider contexts in which people live. I’m also interested in the different aspects of ourselves that can emerge at different times, and in how emotional experience is often felt and expressed in the body as well as in thoughts and feelings. Over time, the work supports reflection, insight, and meaningful change.

I aim to offer a steady and non-judgemental space, where there is no expectation to have the right words or to know exactly what you want to work on. Many people come to therapy feeling unsure or uncertain, and that uncertainty is welcome here. We work at a pace that feels manageable, allowing trust and understanding to develop gradually.

Like many therapists, my way of working has been shaped by ongoing reflection, personal development, and a commitment to understanding myself as well as others. I believe this personal work is an important part of being able to sit alongside people with care, steadiness, and attention.

My professional training includes a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Person-Centred / Humanistic), alongside a BA and a Master’s degree in social science and social research. I’m committed to ongoing professional development, supervision, and reflective practice.
